Rona Ambrose, the Leader of the Official Opposition, issues statement to mark Puthandu, the Tamil New Year

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, issued the following statement to mark Puthandu, the Tamil New Year:

“Today, Canadians of Tamil descent will join with friends and family as they gather to celebrate the incoming year.

“During this joyous occasion, Tamils will gather with family and friends to exchange gifts and enjoy traditional food. Many families also mark this celebration by attending temples and churches to pray.

“On the eve of Puthandu, family and friends will get together and arrange a tray with a variety of items including fruits, flowers, coins and jewellery, which are symbolic growth and prosperity.

“Another Puthandu tradition is to decorate the entrances of homes with Kolams – a picture using rice flour, chalk and natural powders from the region of Tamil Nadu.

“As Tamil Canadians illustrate their colourful and vibrant culture, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the vast and vibrant contributions of Tamils in shaping our great country.

“On behalf of the Official Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I would like to extend my best wishes to all Tamil Canadians, in welcoming the New Year.

“Iniya Tamizh Puthaandu Nalvazhthukka!”
